1. Use the traditional wall
Brick walls are good when you want a permanent divider. Another permanent example would be to use clear or etched glass. Using glass allows the light from the other side in, without compromising the purpose of the glass divider. If you intend to take down the divider or move it somewhere else, then this is not an option for you.
2. Use the door
This is ideal if you want to close a space at certain times. For example, you want to separate your work space and your living room, but during gathering or party, you need to combine those two spaces to accomodate a larger crowd. Folding doors allow the whole wall to be folded away, while the use of sliding doors are great to quickly change the scene.
3. Raise / lower that floor level
A change on floor level makes a dramatic divider, as it gives your eyes the illusion of two totally separate areas. However, be mindful of your step, as you could trip over!
4. Use the furnitures
Cupboards and bookshelves can be utilized to divide a space. A good idea is to use a double-sided bookshelves as the divider, where it can be accessed from both sides of the divided spaces! Another alternative is to use a long bench or a daybed.
5. Put up the curtains and blinds
The simplest way to screen off an area is to use the slated or Roman blinds that are hung from the ceiling. For a softer look, replace blinds with curtains.
6. Use different floorings / floor patterns
Use the area rug or carpet for your seating area, and let the floor be bare for your work area. This change in floor coverings is an inexpensive way to separate a space.
7. Incorporate different style
Arrange the furniture such that it defines the area for separate activities. You can also use different style of furnitures and furnishing for each activities. For example, use soft and cushy couch for the seating area, and use hard-wearing workdesk and armchair for your work area.
8. Change the mood using lights
Ever wonder that light could be a great space divider? Well, it definitely can! Use different tone of light for each activity area. For work areas, use bright general lighting. Opt for a low light for your relaxation area. Group the downlights together to highlight the division of area.
