Good-sized living room

So what makes a good-sized living room? You may think that a large space is ideal for a living area as it could accommodate a lot of furniture and fittings. Or you may fall into the category of a less is more, where you prefer a small space for living room, as it is cosier and intimate. Let's do the assessment.

1. Going for big
More on this soon…

mount tv on wall
Mount your television on the wall, if your living room is small in size. This could help ease overcrowding.

2. Small wonder
One of the advantages of having a small space, is that it is easier to decorate, less expensive plus less mess! The following ideas are great for small spaces.

a. Space does matter
A small room will look more spacious if you keep the furniture and furnishings small. Make sure you mesure up your room before buying that 'small-looking' furniture that you spotted in the store. The eyes can be deceiving!

b. K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple. An uncomplicated decorative scheme works bet for a small room. Choose pale or neutral tones with perhaps just one wall in a bold colour (often called the feature wall). Limit yourself to small prints, and if you must use big prints, chose those which are within the similar color range.

c. Focus
Creating a focus in a room would immediately boost the mood of a small room. Place an armchair, a cupboard, a throw or any single piece of item in contrasting color than the rest of the colors in the room. You'd immediately give your small space that wow factor!

d. Zen
Create harmony in your small room. Think bare windows and floors, and unbleached cottons and linens. To bring the nature in, place a single flower in a clear vase in the room. Keep the wall clear to make the room feel bigger, and try to keep all surfaces, especially the floor, uncluttered.

e. Storage, storage, storage
Providing a good place to store small items, such as magazines, newspaper, CDs, DVDs and so on, encourage the rest of your household members to keep the place tidy.

f. Unusual alternatives
If storage is a problem, let's get creative - hang that television on the wall, use a folding tables and chairs, hide clutter in a nearly invisible, shallow closet with plain doors painted the same color as the wall.

g. Mirror, mirror on the wall
Mirrors create the illusion of a bigger room, however they also reflect lights. You wouldn't want to keep seeing double everytime you chill out in your living room, now would you? Keep mirrors behind you, or at an angle, and place them high enough too avoid too much eye contact. Also, allow the light in from a large window area, to create a feeling of a bigger space.

h. Indulge
Buy an enormous, expensive or extravagant modern arm chair or sofa to indulge yourself in a little luxury. Place a beautiful handmade rug or an ankle-deep wool carpet in the room. Cover the windows with blinds or drapes in expensive or glamorous fabric. Take advantage of the small room as a place to indulge as it is obviously less costly to furnish as opposed to the entire house.

3. Open it up
Knocking down as many walls as possible can turn two or three ordinary rooms into one stunning space with lots of lights coming through. Or you might also want to scrap out the entire floor! Doing this carefully, you could find that the sum of the whole is greater than the parts. However, before you make such changes, consult your builder - you do not want the upper floor to collapse anytime soon.

On another note...
Accessorize your Living Room.

Plasma and LCD Televisions are remarkable reinventions of TVs. Thanks to their sleek and slim figures, they make very good decorating item especially in your living room, without taking too much space.
